Luca Gőbölyös DLA habil, Rudolf Balogh Prize-winning photographer, college teacher

Graduated from the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest, then received her PhD in photography and habilitated there in 2016. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Brighton. In addition to her creative work, she was instrumental in founding the Department of Photography at the Metropolitan University, and was Head of Department for 12 years.

Her work has been exhibited in many countries around the world. Herwork has been exhibited at the Istanbul Biennale, the Chicago Expo, the National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi), the Vienna Art Fair and the Walter Bischoff Gallery in Berlin, among others. For more than a decade she has been an artist at the Knoll Gallery in Vienna and Budapest.

“Nothing to see here!”

Luca Göbölyös’s work, the first picture in the “Nothing to see here!” series, “Death of Peace”, is an attempt to understand reality in depth. It is as endless an approach as the way a team of investigators assembles, frame by frame, the supposed but ontologically eternal enigmatic facts of the case, which remain forever in shadow.

This project is at once linked to the methodology and tradition of crime photography, which is the name of the detective Alphonse Bertillon, the founder of modern criminology, while the entire series of photographs responds to the perennial and urgent issues of Humanity, Justice, Peace, Freedom, the threat to the Civilisation on earth .

Like the original crime scene images, the central image in the series captures the most important, photo-document worthy, defining moment of a man’s life: his death. This is the drama of the image. This central image also speaks in the language of the genre of crime photography which promises that by visually capturing this extraordinary event, we can get to grips with one of the most disturbing questions of our existence. Anxiously, fearfully, we observe the nature of death at close quarters. We might think that those who become initiated will possess the heavy burden of an important truth.

This central image is accompanied by forensic images. Here the actual forensic work has been done, real images taken by the investigators called into the project, in order to make visible what has happened before the exposure and to reveal the “truth”. This highlights the limitations, the possibilities and the melancholic hopelessness of using (police) photography as a documentary tool.
Underneath the pixelated face or the trivial argument of the media’s invocation of the right to privacy lies the taboo of the word power in “nothing to see here” and the hypocritical denial of the horror of understanding reality. The strategy of wanting to accommodate and denying at the same time, the self-contradictory way in which we deal with the stark facts of our existence, of our present.

On the opening day of the exhibition, it will be only a month since the long thought to be Pax Europae came to an abrupt end. Here where we live, although there is no war, there is no peace. Peace is dead!

Gőbölyös Luca DLA habil, Balogh Rudolf díjas fotográfus, főiskolai tanár

A budapesti Moholy-Nagy Művészeti Egyetemen diplomázott, majd doktorált fotográfia szakon, s ugyanitt habilitált 2016-ban. A Brightoni Egyetemen képzőművészeti mesterdiplomát szerzett. Alkotói munkája mellett a Metropolitan Egyetem fotográfia szakának alapításában játszott meghatározó szerepet, majd 12 éven keresztül szakvezető volt.

Alkotásait a világ számos országában állították ki. Munkái szerepeltek többek között az Isztambuli Biennálén, a chicagói Expo-n, a National Gallery of Modern Art (New Delhi) kiállításain, de többször szerepelt a bécsi Művészeti Vásáron/Vienna Art Fair vagy a berlini Walter Bischoff galériában. Több mint egy évtizede a bécsi és budapesti helyszínnel is rendelkező Knoll Galéria művésze.

“Nincs itt semmi látnivaló!”

Göbölyös Luca munkája, a „Nincs itt semmi látnivaló!” sorozat első képe: a “Béke halála”, a valóság mélyére ásni vágyó megértés kísérlete. Éppoly végtelen megközelítési folyamat, mint ahogyan egy nyomozó-stáb mozaikkockáról mozaikkockára rakja össze a titkokkal teli gyilkosság vélt, ám ontológiailag mindörökre árnyékban maradó enigmatikus tényeit.

Ez a projekt egyszerre kötődik a modern kriminalisztikát megalapozó Alphonse Bertillon nyomozó nevével fémjelzett bűnügyi fényképezés módszertanához és hagyományához, miközben a teljes fényképsorozat az Emberiesség, az Igazság, a Béke, a Szabadság, a Földi civilizáció veszélyeztetettségnek örökérvényű, egyben sürgetően aktuális problémafelvetéseire reagál.

Ahogy az eredeti bűnügyi helyszínelős képek, a sorozat központi képe is egy ember életének legfontosabb, fotódokumentálást érdemlő, kiemelt pillanatát rögzíti: halálát. Ez adja a kép drámáját. E központi kép is a bűnügyi fotó műfajának nyelvezetén szólal meg, mely azzal az ígérettel hat, hogy a rendkívüli esemény vizuális megragadása révén tetten érjük létezésünk egyik legnyugtalanítóbb kérdését, és szorongva, félve, közvetlen közelről figyelhetjük meg a halál természetét. Azt hihetjük, aki beavatottá válik, birtokosává válik egy fontos igazság nehéz terhének.

Ezt a központi képet helyszínelő képek kísérik. Itt már ténylegesen elvégzett helyszínelési munka folyt, valódi, a projektbe behívott nyomozók által elkészített képek célja, hogy láthatóvá tegyék mindazt, ami az exponálást megelőzően történt, s általa deritsék fel az „igazságot”. Ez a mozzanat az alkalmazott (rendőrségi) fotó, mint dokumentációs eszköz használatának korlátaira, lehetőségeire és melanchólikus reménytelenségére világít rá.
A médiából ismert kipixelezett arc vagy a személyiségi jogra hivatkozó triviális érvelés mélyén a “nincs itt semmi látnivaló”-ban rejlő hatalmi szó tabusítása, továbbá a valóság megértésétől való iszony álszent tagadása húzódik meg. Az a befogadni akaró, egyben eltagadó stratégia, amivel létünk, jelenünk kiélezett tényeihez önellentmondóan viszonyulunk.

A kiállítás nyitónapján lesz még csak egy hónapja, hogy a hosszúnak vélt Pax Europae egy csapásra véget ért. Itt, ahol élünk, bár háború nincsen, immáron béke sincs. A béke halott!
